REMOTE DEVICE

PHOTOGRAPHING any subject, especially when using slower shutter speeds requires meticulous attention to technique even if the camera is mounted on a tripod. Depressing the shutter button carefully with your finger will impart a certain amount of movement and therefore affect sharpness and degrade the quality of the image. When shooting close-ups and working at higher magnifications, it is even more critical since any movement, even if minimal, will be magnified and clearly evident when your photograph is enlarged. I use a remote device for virtually all of my macro work except when I’m photographing on the move with a monopod. I can’t emphasise strongly enough how important this is. All camera manufacturers make at least one. I have a few different units from Nikon, which I alternate between depending on what I’m doing. Most remote devices are relatively simple to use and consist of wire with a connection at the end which is inserted into the camera’s terminal. Some models are fairly basic; other more expensive units offer more features, such as interval timer and a backlit control panel etc. They are also extremely useful when the mirror lock-up feature is employed.
